What happens if you test positive for COVID-19?
It is imperative members of the Georgia State community who test positive for COVID-19 continue to report their status to the university so we can notify those from our community who may have been in close contact (within six feet of the person who tested positive for 15 or more minutes) with the person who tested positive and advise them of the next steps to take. If completing the form to report someone who tested positive, it is important the name of the person who tested positive for COVID-19 be provided so case investigators can engage with the person. The identity of the person who tested positive is always kept confidential by the university and not disclosed to the close contacts.
This report is intended to provide a mechanism for Georgia State community members to self-report positive COVID-19 diagnoses, suspected positive diagnoses, direct exposure or presumed exposure. This information is given voluntarily and will only be shared with the Student Health Clinic, the dean of students (for students) and Human Resources (for employees) for support, symptom monitoring and close contact identification.
The voluntary reporting form will be available during winter break, however case investigation for the general Georgia State community will be held until Jan. 4, 2021. Students who remain in campus housing over the break are encouraged to continue to submit reports as needed and will be contacted over break. We strongly encourage any Georgia State community members who have a positive test or have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 to follow CDC’s recommendations for isolation and quarantine while on break using the following links:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/end-home-isolation.html
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/quarantine.html
Responsibility for investigating positive cases and identifying those at risk of exposure lies with the Georgia Department of Public Health and Georgia’s county health departments. Georgia State has partnered with our state and county health departments, assisting with that activity, by investigating cases reported to the university through our reporting system. Teams of Georgia State faculty, staff and students have been trained in case investigation and contact tracing. They will be contacting those members of the university community who are reported as positive cases and following up with those individuals who are determined to have been at risk for exposure to COVID-19 at Georgia State.
Georgia State students, faculty and staff can also get COVID-19 tests at the off-campus sites that are open to all of the public. So, if you have a close friend or loved one who isn’t a member of the Georgia State community and wants a test, they can visit a public testing site.

Forms of Testing
- Saliva Testing: Georgia State is offering free saliva-based testing to students, faculty and staff at the Downtown Atlanta Campus and each of our five Perimeter campuses. No appointment or medical referral is required. When you arrive at your testing site, you will need to register for your test at covid.vlt.co. This FDA-approved test is expected to return results within 72 hours.
- PCR Testing: This test, requiring swabbing of the nasopharyngeal cavity, is the most accurate. We have capacity on-campus to process a limited number of these tests in less than 24 hours, and we are prioritizing its use as follows:
- Testing for symptomatic students will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by Student Health Clinic providers.
- Weekly testing of random subsets of students living in university housing.
- Students as required for participation in university-sponsored activities, for example, athletics, clinical experiences and ROTC.
- We recommend that those who have received a positive COVID-19 test do not get tested again for 90 days unless they experience new symptoms or a significant change in symptoms.
